James Murdock founded Endless Pools, Inc. in 1988 to manufacture and sell a range of counter-current swimming machines to residential and commercial markets. Murdock built his first swimming machine on the pool deck of Columbia University, where he had just earned an MBA in Marketing. Working with the Columbia men's swim coach, he sought to create a machine with a smooth, even, adjustable current for swimming, therapy, training and fun—in short, the perfect home-exercise tool.

The inspiration for the Endless Pool® came decades earlier in Arizona, where James' father, John, learned to swim in aquaducts. John, an amateur inventor, built his own "swimming machine" in the 1950s in order to explore the idea of swimming in place against a current. James remembers his father’s pool was only 3 feet wide without heat—two issues he has since resolved.

Over the years, the Endless Pool has taken several forms as the Murdocks, both engineers, and their design team worked to perfect the laminar current. The Endless Pool now measures 8’x15’ and includes a range of options for both swimmers and those seeking therapeutic relief. Its modular design makes it adaptable to any location or installation. With the Endless Pool, virtually anyone can "Swim at Home".

Now, the Endless Pool current is also available for your existing pool. The new Fastlane® easily installs into virtually any pool making the traditional backyard pool more than just a place to cool off and splash around. With the Fastlane, no matter the size of your pool, you can swim for miles and miles without moving an inch.

As a national sponsor of US Masters Swimming, the Ironman Triathlon and the British Swimming and the Amateur Swimming Association, Endless Pools has begun to spread its benefits to another important niche: swim coaching and athletic training. A number of options, such as underwater cameras and full-length mirrors, available with both the Endless Pool and the Fastlane, greatly enhance traditional training methods. The immediate performance feedback these options provide make the Endless Pools’ swimming machines essential training tools.
