Choosing a Custom Pool Depth

If you are interested in a deep area for
running, aqua aerobics or other deep-water exercises,
you will want to establish the optimal depth for your
height and needs. Visit an existing pool -- a community
pool, for example -- and perform your intended activity
to determine ideal water depth.
For standing activities, most people prefer the water depth to be about chest height. Running with
a flotation device requires deeper water. When deep-water
running, you should be able to point your toes without
touching the bottom.
To establish how deep your custom
deep area must be, subtract the standard pool depth
from the desired total pool depth. Use this example
as a guide:
| Total Water Depth Desired |
51"
(for example) |
| Standard Pool Water Depth |
39" |
| Necessary Add-on Depth of Deep End |
12" |
